Those 1950s Parties Rocked!

In 2009 Quaker Service Australia (QSA) invited supporters around Australia to host fifty 1950’s themed parties around Australia to raise money for QSA projects throughout the world. While we didn’t get as a many as 50 events, we were impressed with the enthusiasm around Australia and are pleased to announced that lots of fun was had by all and funds raised for QSA projects around the world. Well done everyone!

Events included a 1950’s trivia night at Devonshire St Meeting in NSW where Friends were seen dancing while Elvis looked on, a sing-along at Wahroonga meeting in NSW where a pair of blue suede shoes were auctioned off for a handsome sum, and a hat party in Canberra where prizes were given for categories of hat including “most Quakerly”. Meanwhile Melbourne Eastern Suburbs Meeting held a pasta and trivia night, a New Year’s Eve party took place in Perth, a group of friends held an anti-fifty’s party in Sydney where they discussed the negatives of the 1950s, and in Hobart Quakers heard from the first person QSA sent overseas at an afternoon tea and talk. If Friends have suggestions for next year’s theme, please get in touch with the QSA office in Sydney on 02 9698 9103.

Sorry Day

On 26th May 1997 the "Bringing them home" report was released, revealing the extent of the forced removal policies and the devastating effects of these policies. Sorry Day is a chance to acknowledge the message within that report. Many people hold memorial events around the country. QSA supporters and friends from ANTaR braved the weather to walk across the Anzac Bridge as a symbol of solidarity. QSA Week at Friends School

The Friends School in Hobart recently welcomed the visit of QSA Education Officer, Aletia Dundas. During the week of 19th to 23rd April the whole school participated in what has come to be known as QSA Week. The week included fundraising activities such as a pancake day, and a grey day where students wore free dress in exchange for a small fee.

At year Gatherings, and with smaller classroom groups, students heard all about the work of Quaker Service Australia and participated in some of the activities that appear in the new QSA Education Kit. The Education Kit, entitled "Food, Water and Land: Fundamental Human Rights" was launched at a Gathering of Yr5 and Yr6 students. Photo: Aletia Dundas and Yr5-6 Gathering launch the kit.

Hat Party

Canberra Quakers recently held a Hat Party to raise funds for Quaker Service Australia. There were all manner of Mad Hatters enjoying an afternoon of drinks and nibbles at a beautiful garden location.

Hats worn included a variety of bonnets, a Ship's captain, Court Jester, a hat filled to the brim with ear-rings, After a short briefing on some of QSA's projects with Aboriginal communities, awards were given for the most Elegant, most Interesting, most Historical and most Simple Hat among others.

The party, which was enjoyed by all, managed to raise over $2,000 which went to Quaker Service Australia. What a tremendous effort! Photos: David and Chris (L) as Captain and Jester, and Stephen (R) with his mathematical hat.

Visit of Zohl de Ishtar to Sydney

On Thursday 25th February Quaker Service Australia had the pleasure of welcoming Zohl de Ishtar to share with Sydney Friends the story of the Kapululangu Aboriginal Women's Association in Balgo, WA. Through a photographic presentation and personal anecdotes Zohl captivated the audience and encouraged a vigorous discussion about remote Aboriginal communities. Zohl is pictured here with some of the audience members.

Launch of Friends in deed

On 20th March 2009, Quaker Service Australia launched its 50th Anniversary book entitled "Friends in deed". The book, which was written in order to commemorate the work done by QSA over the past fifty years, contains the stories of the many Quakers and others who have been involved in our work. It was wonderful to see so many of those people at the launch on Friday.

The book was launched by John Langmore from the United Nations Association of Australia, and a long time friend of many Quakers. We thank him for stepping in so gratiously.
